The RX100 VII packs a 20.1-megapixel 1-inch-type sensor into a pocketable fixed-lens body, giving it a 2.7x crop factor relative to full frame — the same sensor size used across most premium compact cameras and several enthusiast drones. That crop factor means noticeably more depth of field at a given real aperture than a full-frame or APS-C camera would produce framing the same scene, which is worth accounting for deliberately if background separation matters to a shot.

It also packs a genuinely fast 24-200mm equivalent zoom lens into its pocketable body, a substantial focal-length range for a fixed-lens compact this size, made possible partly by the 1-inch sensor's smaller size relative to full frame. It also added a real-time tracking autofocus system borrowed from Sony's full-frame flagships, a genuine capability upgrade over earlier RX100 generations that gave this pocketable compact surprisingly serious continuous-autofocus performance for its size. Sony also added a genuine touch-focus and touch-tracking interface to the RX100 VII's rear screen, a real usability improvement over earlier RX100 generations that relied entirely on physical buttons and dials for focus point selection.
Sony also added a genuine single-burst shooting mode capturing up to 90 frames in one second to the RX100 VII, aimed specifically at capturing the exact peak moment of fast action.
