Released in 2019, the SL2 is Leica's autofocus-equipped full-frame mirrorless body, genuinely distinct from the manual-focus-only M-series rangefinder line — built with substantial weather sealing and a robust, professional-grade construction aimed at hybrid photo-and-video work rather than the traditional rangefinder shooting the M-series represents, and compatible with M-mount lenses via an adapter.

The SL2 also introduced a genuinely effective in-body stabilization system rated up to 5 stops, a real addition over the original SL, which launched without any in-body stabilization at all and relied entirely on lens-based correction where available. A genuine, meaningful improvement for handheld shooting in situations where a tripod isn't practical. The original SL, released in 2015, had none at all. Genuinely notable given Leica's typically slower feature-adoption pace.

Leica also gave the SL2 a genuinely high-resolution electronic viewfinder, among the sharpest available on any mirrorless camera at its release, matching its positioning as Leica's professional-grade autofocus body.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the SL2 compatible with Leica's M-series rangefinder lenses?

Yes, using a mechanical adapter, though the M-series lenses remain manual focus only when mounted this way since they lack the electronic contacts SL-native lenses use for autofocus — a real, workable option for photographers wanting to use existing M-mount glass on an autofocus-capable full-frame body without buying entirely new lenses.
