Why do astrophotographers want the widest possible aperture lens?

Because shutter speed is capped by star trailing rather than chosen freely, aperture is the one variable astrophotographers can widen to gather meaningfully more light within that fixed time window — f/1.4 gathers a full two stops more light than f/2.8 at the identical shutter speed and ISO, computed directly from the aperture ratio, a substantial, real difference in a genre where every stop matters.

Why This Differs From Daylight Aperture Choices

In ordinary daylight photography, a photographer chooses aperture largely for depth of field and trades shutter speed freely against it. In astro work, shutter speed is effectively fixed by the trailing threshold, which removes that usual tradeoff entirely — a wider aperture doesn't cost you shutter speed the way it normally would, since you're already shooting at your trailing-limited maximum regardless of aperture. This specific need — maximum light gathering at a fixed wide focal length, with coma well-controlled toward the edges even wide open — is different enough from general-purpose lens design priorities that several manufacturers build primes marketed specifically for astro use, commonly in the 14-24mm range at f/1.4 to f/1.8. Only very slightly — the NPF formula includes aperture as a minor term, with a narrower aperture producing a marginally longer safe shutter speed, but focal length, pixel pitch and declination all have a much larger effect on the result than aperture does.

Is an f/1.4 lens always better than an f/2.8 lens for astro?
